The opening chapter of Subliminal. The Basement functions as an unguided tutorial — no on-screen instructions appear. You are expected to discover the light mechanics organically.
Step 1 — Orientation
You begin facing a dark concrete wall. Turn around. You are at the bottom of a wooden staircase leading up to a
closed door — the only way out is through the basement.
Step 2 — The Furnace Room
Enter the furnace room. Approach the ceiling bulb and interact to detach it. Crouch and sweep the floor near the
furnace for Lore Note #1.
Step 3 — Shelving & Sensor Panel
Go left in the corridor. Clear the sensor panel (move shelf or aim through gap). Hold light ~2s until amber lock
and click.
Step 4 — Floor Hatch
In the split-level corridor, crouch and light the far wall at an angle to spot the rug covering the floor hatch. Open it to reach WaterWorks.
▸ Do not rush past the furnace room — there is a lore note on the floor only visible when you carry a light source low to the ground.
▸ The shelving unit can be physically nudged to clear the angle to the sensor panel if you prefer not to find the alternate aim path.
▸ The hidden floor hatch is covered by a rug. The rug edge is visible if you cast light at a 45-degree angle from the doorway.

🔍 The door to the right of the entry stairs is locked but has a small gap at the bottom. Crouching and casting light through it reveals a shadow on the far wall shaped like a hand — this is purely atmospheric but part of the lore.
