The Figure

The central antagonist of Subliminal. The Figure is a tall, featureless silhouette that appears at the boundary of your field of vision before ever approaching directly. In The Basement, it is visible only as a shape in a doorway or a reflection in a darkened window. By WaterWorks, it begins active pursuit. In Childhood Memories, its behavior shifts from predatory to mirrored — it no longer chases but reflects.

🧠 Behavior System

Subliminal uses a hesitation-detection system rather than fixed patrol routes. The Figure registers: (1) time standing still in one location — 8+ seconds in active zones triggers heightened awareness; (2) failed puzzle attempts — each failed attempt increases entity aggression by ~15%; (3) directional movement — consistent forward progress calms the entity, stopping or backtracking escalates it.

🛡️ Survival Rules

1. Keep moving — standing still for more than 8 seconds in any lit corridor increases encounter probability.
2. Prioritize puzzle completion. Solving the zone's main puzzle triggers a reset of entity aggression.
3. Light does not repel The Figure. The common misconception arises because puzzles change lighting conditions upon completion — but the light itself is not the deterrent.
4. If you hear a low resonant breathing sound, you are within 15 meters of an active entity encounter. Do not stop to look around — this is the instinct that gets most players caught.
5. In Childhood Memories: turn your back on The Figure and walk backward through doors. Looking at it halts your progress.

📖 Lore (spoilers)

The Figure is a grief manifestation — revealed in Ending 2 to be a psychological construct created by the protagonist's subconscious as a way of processing a significant loss connected to childhood. The backrooms themselves are not a real place but a memory architecture; The Figure is the protagonist's mind preventing them from reaching the resolution at the center.

⚡ Weaknesses

None in combat terms. Puzzle completion is the only reliable deterrent. In the school hallway of Fragment 2, deliberately reducing ambient light to near-zero causes The Figure to slow to a near-stop.

No. Subliminal has no combat mechanics. The only way to deal with The Figure is to solve the current area's main puzzle — completion triggers a reset of entity aggression — or to evade it.
❓ Does light repel The Figure?
No. This is a common misconception. Light does not repel The Figure. The entity retreats after puzzles are solved because solving a puzzle changes the zone's state — not because of the light itself.
